SHORT STORY: In The Beginning... Part V

In The Beginning...
PART V

I hear breathing and I don't realize it's mine until I lift my head and see the vaporous cloud rising. I exhale and a cold puff escapes from my open lips. I can't believe what I'm seeing in my hand. The latest weapon of destruction my two peoples have ever made in a joint effort.

Then I realize the vaporous cloud is coming from that weapon and not from me. I lower my hand and my eyes follow the angle of the blasted killer I'm holding.

Oh, no, no, no, no, nooooo.

Eyes open and staring at me with a blank expression, the human on his back has a hole in his forehead. His lips are parted slightly and they give the appearance of someone who was smiling and never knew what hit him. He fell backwards. I know that because one of his legs is bent at the knee and tucked awkwardly under his body. He's wearing a jacket of down...I can smell the feathers from where I stand. The hood of his jacket is caught between his neck and the ground. It's soaked red. Then I notice the dark pool.

Blood.

I move around him; studying him; studying the hole I put just above his nose. His hands are palm down on the dirt. A Glock from the twenty-first century lies under one.

I exhale and lift my head to look around.

I remember being angry at Sirona for trying to control my life and take Ren away from me. I remember thinking myself back to the top and onto land. No wonder I can see my breath. It's cold here even for me.

It's night and no one else is around. Well, except for about a thousand dead bodies on the ground. I exhale a long, beautiful vapor. It's not cold enough here yet to freeze it.

Holy schizbo! I couldn't have killed all of these humans. I like humans. I'm half human.

Then I sense her. A woman hiding behind the corner of the building across the road.

"It's okay," I call. "You're safe."

I barely have time to move, that how quickly she steps out, holds up her weapon, points it at me, and fires. It's one of those things they used to call an automatic and a round of bullets follows me to a pile of rubble.

I exhale. Civilization going to pieces. Fine!

Another round whizzes near my shoulder when I try to lift my head to see where she is. The temperatures in this town along the ice-free coast range from eighteen to forty-five degrees Fahrenheit across the seasons. It was probably around twenty degrees the night the war between the Reptilians and the Greys began. It wasn't much warmer tonight.

"You alien! You murdered him and now I'm going to murder you!"

Ahhh, the woman has a voice. I fire my weapon in the air above me...just to let her now I have a bit more power than she. I exhale. This isn't going to end well unless I just vanish.

"Hey, I am half human! Besides, we're the good guys!"

I should go back down and get Ren, but I'm sure the Whites are laying in wait for me to do just that. She's fired sixteen shots, there's only one left. Then I hear her put a new cartridge in the chamber. Schizbo!

"Hey, alien! This is your lucky day, you know?"

"How is that possible?"

"Because this is as close to hell as you're going to get while your alien heart is still BEA-TING!"

She unloads the entire clip, all 17 shots, and I can feel the heat of those bullets as they penetrate and break up the stone slab directly in front of me.

"Okay, okay," I yell. Jeezzz. "You're a hero. I get it.... Look. I promise not to kill you." I listen intently but I don't hear another clip being slid into the pistol's hand grip. She's out of ammunition. I don't sense she has any other weapons. I concentrate listening for any sounds of metal sliding against metal. Nothing.

I exhale.

"See those ships up there? They're the enemies for you and me. One wants us for food and the other just wants us dead."

Still no sounds of metal. Now all of my senses move to full alert.

"Look. I know you're out of ammunition. Just throw out your gun and you will be safe." At least from me.

Suddenly, there's a weight on my back and something hard hits me in the side of my head. I reach back and grab hold and then lean forward. She is dumped at my feet.

"I want justice!" she screams.

Schizbo! It's one of those little people Ren used to tell me about. I always laughed and said he was just making up stories. But, here she is, all four feet of her.

I rise and look down six feet to where she lies at me feet and I see the terror in her eyes. I smile and exhale.

~ ~ ~

I'm paralyzed as I round the corner with Kaarat, the little woman. I estimate thirty or so Reptilians are firing their weapons at around twice as many Greys who are just outside a small building that garages the vehicles for the people of this small, icy island.

"We're dead meat," Kaarat says.

Her voice sounds morphed; it's a fruity-rich, chocolatey voice. I suspect she is one of the true descendents of the original inhabitors of this planet and I wonder if my Whites ancestors mated with these humans when they made their pilgrimage here. It would make sense why the humans, after all these centuries, are taller. She did admit, as we searched for someplace safe to hide that also housed any communication source, that her shorter, stockier body is able to withstand not only severe coldness but also extreme heat.

I tell her in a hushed undertone to back up. "They haven't seen us yet. We'll have to go around them."

We find an empty market and step into it. She is walking on some glass showcases, which makes us almost equal in height, and she lifts her weapon and points it at me.

Schizbo!

"Duck!" she screams and then lets loose with a round from some sort of rifle that just lets ammunition fly repeatedly.

I dive to the ground and roll to my back. The Grey is still coming at us. I show him my weapon. He smiles...sort of. But, he's never seen this one. I fire. Three times. He finally falls.

"Can't you just use that laser gun on all of them and zap them all to Helvete?"

I chuckle and think Yeah, when Helvete freezes over. Because we were definitely in the right place for that to happen. "No, they'd capture use before I could kill ten of them. And, trust me, you do not want to be captured by those devilish Reptilians."

I guess my mind was thinking of Ren simultaneously because he's walking toward me surrounded by four Whites.

I only have to think his name and I'm there, my arms wrapped around his neck, and I'm hugging him close to me. I never believed I'd say this, but he is one handsome human. I feel his heart hammers against my chest, then I realize it's mine.

"You don't know how good it is to see you," I think so only the Whites can hear. "We need your help to escape the Reps and Greys."

"We are here to escort you back to your mother. She is allowing this human to be here so you two can say good-bye to each other."

SHORT STORY: Part IV of IN THE BEGINNING...

In The Beginning...
Part IV

Help me. The Reptilians have me in a food bank somewhere and I can't find my way out. I send my plea telepathically to every White, but mostly I want my mother to hear it.

I don't believe it's my destiny or that of my peoples, both the Whites and the humans, to be enslaved by the Reptilians or the Greys. Or to be used as their cattle, especially when the real cattle are awake and walking around and living and aware of the Reps and the Greys around them. My people, the Whites, are not aggressive as a race of beings, but I know they will not let members be held without putting up a fight to save them.

My mother, Sirona—this is the closest name in earth languages for the meaning of who she is—sends an army of Whites to rescue me. I despise the Reptilians and it's not because they captured me or because I'm a White.

Reptilians are base creatures who could care less what others beings think or feel. Reps are proportional in size to the humans on this planet. They have snake- and lizard-like skin and eyes. Linda Applestone was half human and she is lucky to have the thin skin of humans to disguise what she is...a Reptoid. All Reptoids, no matter what beings in the universe they are bred from, are highly advanced entities, but they are hostile and dangerous since they regard any other beings as totally inferior.

There's a battle between the Whites rescuing me and the Reptilians stationed at the food bank where I have been stored. I see the entire battle and sense the agony as some of my people are killed. The brutality the Reptilians serve is countered, but not without injuries and deaths. In the end, it's the Reptilians that are extinguished.

Whites don't hug, but hell, I'm half human. I throw my arms around the first of my rescuers and embrace his stiff body; stiff because he senses what I intend and isn't sure how to respond. It's a human way to say "thanks", and more, but the emotion is lost on the White. Sirona's voice telepathically reminds all of us there is still Ren to rescue. I don't need reminding. I haven't forgotten him.

Sirona sees where he is, but only because she can connect to him from my personal attachment to this human. Two rescuer Whites stay behind with me, I have no weapons to defend myself, while the others head for their next battle to save Ren. Above us, the battle between the Reptilians and the Greys continues; all around is the destruction caused by their battle ships being shot down and crashing into the buildings and homes on this planet.

Humans scream in terror and run without purpose or direction. There's no order here; only chaos. Many are injured and dying and no one is willing to stop and help those who need assistance. When we stop to offer assistance, they see only my two rescuers and refuse help; they point fingers and shout insults blaming us and calling us names.

Something about us never before revealed is that we don't need vehicles to travel. We just think about where we want to be and like a beam of light, we are there. More Whites are killed and more are injured in the battle to free Ren. I know before they reach us that the news is not good.

I'm crying. Well, I am half human and it's my prerogative to cry for the loss of a human who loved me but whom I never returned the words.

"He's dead, isn't he?" I think, when they bring in his lifeless body on a cot. It's obvious where the Reps put in a tube to keep him fresh until he became a snack or part of a larger meal. There's blood on that side of his neck that flowed like a river until it dried. I shed some tears, but I can hear my voice and it sounds emotionless, like he dies every day.

Their thoughts meld with my own: "You are safe but do you have injuries?"

"I am fine. How can I repay you for finding him?"

They ignore my question. "We need to return to Sirona and rid this planet of these thoughtless Greys and uncaring Reptilians," one of them says, using telepathy. Everyone's agreement is a pretty watershed moment for what will become history for Earth and its human inhabitants.

"I have a question." Those who are here with me and able to give me a look that says "anything is possible." I know the same from all who are not here with me or even here on this planet.

"Has it ever been done before? Bringing a human back to life?" I think, and they answer affirmatively and in unison.

Sirona adds, "If you had ever bothered to take time to read any of this planet's history from their religious manuals, Morgan, you would know it has been accomplished many times...but not for thousands of years."

"Why is the human so important?" one of the Whites thinks, and I know she does it for all to hear, not me alone.

"Yes, why? There are humans dying all over this planet and no one is asking for them to be brought back to life."

"He is important to Morgan, that's all any of us need know," Sirona thinks and we all hear the decision in her thought. "Morgan, let them handle bringing this Ren to us. You must fly home now. I do not want you injured or captured...again. No; no arguments, Morgan. I mean what I say."

It takes a moment of thought this time, but I think of Sirona and where she is, I become a tiny light, and in seconds I am with her.

Her kingdom is hidden somewhere north of seventy-two degrees north, forty degrees west. Humans have inhabited this area for thousands of years, but beneath the body of water around this land is where she and the Whites of this planet hide and live.

Sirona and I do not embrace. I know I am her daughter; she knows that I know she is my mother. What remains is elemental and sentimentality is unneeded.

"There is a price you must pay to save this human being."

"Why?"

"It is the way. It has always been the way since these beings came to life. There was, there is, and there always will be a price for one of us to pay when a life-saving pleas is made for them. Certainly you do not expect me to hold you higher and beyond our law."

Actually, I never knew about this law. My thoughts spin wildly and I wonder for a second time in the long days of war that have passed if I am willing to give my life to save Ren. "What kind of price?"

"No. Not a life for a life."

Even if I had not been in the same room, I would know that look of victory in her expression.

"You will marry the male I choose."

"What? What kind of law is that? Is it even a law? I think you made it up! If I knew that—"

There may as well have been a victory celebration where everyone could dance...telepathically. My mother is happy to see me dissatisfied. She knows I am trapped. There is no right response for me to offer.

She thinks, "You would still ask for this Ren's life to be returned. Think Morgan. If he remains dead, you will marry who I choose, and if we give him back his life, you will be obligated to marry who I choose."

"So, I lose no matter what I choose, right?"

She turns her back and glides away from me and into a thin forest of trees that have been growing in the underwater colony longer than humans have inhabited the land above.

"If we give him life, you win, daughter. You get what you want. And, our colony on this planet wins because we all get what we want."

"What are you telling me? That everyone wants me to marry a White? Why? I am half human. Why is it you were able to be with the human you wanted and I must mate for life with a White...of your choosing?"

"There will be no more discussion, Morgan. We off you a choice."

I let my unhappiness and anger spill over into my thoughts so every living White will know and feel it. "Some choice! Give up Ren and be unhappy, or give up Ren and we both can be unhappy."

SHORT STORY: Part III from In The Beginning

In The Beginning...
Part III

The first incoming comes at three in the morning—when everyone's asleep. Resonating at a higher frequency than my ears can pick up, I know the humans won't hear the destruction happening on the outskirt of the cities until it's too late. I have only half of my people's sentient abilities sense things going on around me and to blink in and out of existence. I mean, being half human, I have to really concentrate and when my cell is hit, I sense without thinking that I am not the target but I could die if I don't move. I just blink and I'm on the outside looking for safe cover just before the entire Einstein-Hawking's Brain Probe Institute implodes.

I see a human and I wave my arm to get his attention. By the time I realize I'm still suffering Akinetopsia from my probe, a human arm wraps around my waist and pulls me into an opening in the ground. I didn't even see him move.

"Wow, man. I didn't see you coming."

A laser bomb from a Grey's ship hovering about fifty miles away lights the sky and the earth rumbles under my feet. It's like the rumbling experienced from the explosion of earth's volcanoes.

"Morgan; it's me. Ren. You're motion blind, aren't you? How long ago did they probe you?"

"It was pretty soon after I arrived. They didn't waste time." I try to smile but I'm pretty sure it looks more like a grimace. "But, I kept my brain blank. They didn't find out anything from me."

"Good girl."

"Well, that's not exactly true. I did let something leak." I giggle and Ren pulls me down a long tunnel.

"What?"

"That Appleton has reached her mating season and is ready to breed warriors and that she's a Reptoid, half Reptilian and half human, and that thousands of alien Reptilians will be invading soon to mate with her. Just little things like that." I smile...grimace...again. "Did the lights just flicker?"

Ren gives me the affirmative sign and then holds one finger to his mouth for me to be quiet. Then he gives me a sign of two fingers in the air. What's that mean. I stand still not knowing what to do. He points ahead and again gives me two fingers. Two what? Two aliens? Two humans? Then he's gone.

Damn motion blindness. Did his two fingers mean for the two of us to continue to move forward? If I make any noise, I can compromise our location. But, I'm more afraid of the Greys and their annihilation of this underground hiding place than I am of anyone finding us.

The enigma facing us is the clandestine nature of the underground tunnel. We're without weapons and I more a hindrance than a help since I can't detect movement. I might be motion blind, but I can hear and there is definitely something coming our way. Or, am I sensing it? Ren doesn't seem to be aware of it.

This is a Reptoid/Reptilian camp and military base. Like Appleton, these aliens are evil and want the nutrients and minerals of this planet for themselves. The Greys want the whole damn planet; that's why they're bombing the crap out of it...to make it unlivable for anything but them. They hate us, the Whites, but they hate the Reps more. To them, humans are slave workers that can live or die. They don't care. Both the Reps and the Greys want a radical depopulation of this planet.

There's a monstrous flash of light only feet away from Ren and then a ten-foot robot rounds a corner carrying a dated laser weapon. I guess the brightness comes from muzzle flash since it seems to light everything in the tunnel from Ren passed the robot...and makes Ren vanish for a moment. Ren screams and I know, I just know, he feels that ice-pick jab in his ears; and then he covers his eyes... then his ears... then his eyes and I can't tell if he does it more than once or twice since time and movement seem to stand still with motion blindness.

I reached him and snatched him backwards a nano second before another blast from that antique laser shooter and I wanted to scream with Ren this time. I ran toward the opening, the hole in the ground he's pulled me through but I wasn't fast enough to avoid the rain of dust and cement from where the laser hit the wall. The wall collapsed and the ceiling was sending bullets of steel-reinforced cement down on everything. Caught in the downpour, the robot falls, but not before releasing his trigger finger, so he blasts the ceiling near us. The floor below him and his laser is flashing much to brightly.

I can sense the fear in Ren as he lets me lead him to safety. He says, "Why is the floor flickering?"

A tearing, deafening pain rips through my brain. I release Ren. Both fists fly to my temples and I fall to my knees on the floor in excruciating pain. Ren likes these strange things called balloons and when I see him waltzing to and fro, twirling in the air, I have a weird sensation I've just popped him like a balloon. I try and wrap my brain around that and suddenly everything goes black.

~ ~ ~

I am awakened by a strange noise and instead of my bed, I find myself underwater. I look up to find an undulating waterscape of reds and blacks and greens. The Reps have me in one of their banks as future food. I remember those finger traps Applestone had my twelve digits trapped in and I'm thankful Ren knew how to release them.

Ren!

Humans can't breathe under water. Did they already devour him or put him in one of their food banks? My head feels like it's wrapped in heavy wool and I move in slow motion through the murky water, my movement destroying the earlier waterscape. My head hits against something mushy hard and my world swims again. And dims. For the first time in years, I let my antennae ascend and my mind open so my thoughts can stretch and reach my mother, my people. I need help.

Morgan's mother and her people
